Our popular Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) will be starting another cohort in June 2019!
Eighty-four million adults in the United States (1 in 3 adults) have prediabetes. In Hawai’i, 442,000 people (1 in 2.5 people) have prediabetes. Surprisingly,9 out of 10 prediabetics don’t even know they have it. Without intervention, 15% to 30% will develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years. While there is no cure for type 2 diabetes, the good news is if you have prediabetes, it can be reversed. By joining a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recognized diabetes prevention lifestyle program, you may help prevent or decrease type 2 diabetes, a heart attack, or a stroke by as much as 71%.
Q: Are there are requirements?
The National Kidney Foundation of Hawai’i will be offering this Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) starting June 2019 for people with prediabetes.
Q: How often do you have to meet?
The program runs for (1) year. During the first (6) months, you will meet with our licensed registered dietitian about once a week. During the second (6) months, you will meet up to 2x a month. The length of the 12-month program has been proven to help participants develop new habits and avoid slipping back into old habits.
Q: What are the benefits?
Participants will learn how to adapt to a healthier lifestyle. Topics include: eating healthier, adding physical activity to your life on a time crunch, coping with stress, managing life challenges, and getting back on track with your progress.
Research has found that after 10 years, people who have completed a diabetes prevention lifestyle program were 33% less likely to develop diabetes.
