Eighty-four million U.S. adults (1 in 3) have prediabetes. In Hawai’i, 442,000 people (1 in 2.5) have prediabetes and the numbers are climbing every year. Surprisingly, the majority of prediabetics don’t even know they have it! Without intervention, 15% - 30% of those people will develop type 2 diabetes within five years. This is a health crisis. Having prediabetes also puts you at high risk for heart disease and stroke.
While there is no cure for type 2 diabetes, the good news is, if you have prediabetes, it can be reversed. By joining a CDC-recognized diabetes prevention lifestyle program you may help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes and/or having a heart attack or stroke by as much as 58% - 71%. You will also feel better and feel more energetic.
The National Kidney Foundation of Hawai’i will be offering a lifestyle program change starting in January 2019 for people with prediabetes. The program runs for 12 months and during that time you will learn how to adapt your current lifestyle to a healthier one. Topics include: healthy eating, adding physical activity to your life even though you don’t think you have time, dealing with stress, coping with challenges that occur with life, and getting back on track if you stray away from your plan.
During the first 6 months, you will meet about once a week. During the second 6 months, you will meet 1-2x a month. The reason for the length of the program (12 months) is to give you time to develop new habits and avoid slipping back into old habits. The impact of this program can last for years to come. Research has found that even after 10 years, people who have completed a diabetes prevention lifestyle program were 1/3 less likely to develop diabetes.
