Candy is available all year round but BEWARE...Halloween is just around the corner. For those who have kidney disease, there are a few candies that may need to be restricted. Candies must be monitored for potassium, phosphorus, and sodium. Remember, portion control is key and some candies can be consumed in small amounts, but please keep an eye out for high phosphorus and high potassium items such as: chocolate, peanuts, peanut butter or coconut.
Make sure to read the nutrition labels and purchase candies that are acceptable for the renal diet. Because nutrition labels don't always list phosphorus or potassium, talk with your dietitian and they will help you identify candies that are acceptable for your diet.
Here are a few treats that you can enjoy!
