Since its founding in 1988, the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii has continually transformed its initiatives to lead groundbreaking public health solutions and respond to the greatest needs of our community.
In 2005, we spearheaded the GFR Alliance in Hawaii to build knowledge and acceptance of the GFR (glomerular filtration rate) test. Hawaii was the first state to have GFR readings automatically reported in lab results once a blood test is ordered. Every single day, the eGFR blood test result helps thousands of Hawaii residents by detecting kidney disease early while there is still time to establish healthier habits and prevent kidney failure.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck the world in 2020, we stepped up to protect the health of our community.
- We pioneered safer transportation for COVID-positive dialysis patients.
- We were the fiscal agent for the pop-up Aloha Free Clinic, which gave free medical care to those who had lost their jobs and health insurance.
- We became one of the largest providers of COVID-19 testing on Oahu with over 25 locations statewide.
