Nephrotic Syndrome Diet

A gloved hand holding a container with a liquid sample.

Beverages have been major contributors of calories to the modern diet.  We have seen studies that have shown an association between sugary sweet beverages and increased risk of obesity, tooth decay and type 2 diabetes.  Dark-colored sodas also have a high amount of phosphorus (with a few exceptions), which those on dialysis need to avoid/limit.  So overall, sodas are probably not a good choice; however, even if we know all of this information, it can still be tough to break the habit.  While researching alternatives, a drink called Zevia came up.  This is a zero-calorie soda that would probably be a good alternative for those who want zero calories, no sugar, no artificial sweeteners, no high-fructose corn syrup and a drink with zero glycemic index but still want a soda every so often.  This drink is actually sweetened with Stevia, a plant-based sweetener, and monk fruit, which is a round, green fruit grown in Asia.  Zevia has flavors such as Cola, Ginger Root Beer, Cream Soda, Grape, Orange, Grapefruit Citrus, etc.  Try it out and see what you think.  Another alternative to soda is to flavor your water with sliced fruit.  This would be healthy and refreshing!
